Peter Schjeldahl, the art critic for The New Yorker, died this week at 82

Appreciation: Why New Yorker art critic Peter Schjeldahl was the last of a breed:

Peter Schjeldahl, the art critic for The New Yorker, died this week at 82. He was the last of his kind: a critic who was a great admirer, a loyal advocate, and a lifelong and tireless servant of art …

Schjeldahl loved art (and was a good writer) and admired a great many artists, including Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keeffe, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. He was one of the first writers to come to grips with Warhol’s pop art and the work of Andy Warhol, whose signature line, “Andy Warhol, you’re alive!” was his hallmark.
