San Jose State’s annual football game against Utah State took a bizarre turn Saturday night after a running back from the University of Southern California was struck and killed while walking at an intersection in Sacramento while a bus carrying the University of Utah was turning right.

The bus driver had missed a turn and was pulling directly into traffic in the 2300 block of South Capitol Street when Garoutte, an 18-year-old sophomore from South Gate, walked in front of the back of the truck and was struck. He later died at the hospital.

“He walked directly in the path of the bus and was struck and killed instantly,” said Jeremy Gee, a spokesman for California Highway Patrol.

The driver, a 49-year-old man who was taken to a hospital after the accident, remained hospitalized with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Gee said it will likely be several days before the driver is cleared to travel.

The driver of the bus, a Salt Lake City man who was driving from San Jose to Utah, was not injured.

“We are shocked and saddened by the tragic event that occurred,” Gee said. “Safety is our top priority here at CHP, and we will utilize all resources available to us to help apprehend the suspects and bring them to justice.”
