For years, a massive and potentially offensive project has been quietly brewing at the University of California, Berkeley. Today, the campus will open a gigantic single bathroom at UC Berkeley that will be capable of holding 2,000 people.
The $13-million project, called the Human Rights Plaza, will open to the public on Friday, April 11, at 5 p.m. The facility won a design award in 2012, and the project is now receiving $3.6 million of a $13 million contract with a federal agency.

The project is on hold due to the large cost, the University of California says. It previously received nearly $15 million of a $20 million contract with a construction firm, which has said it would cost $50 million to build the facility from plans.
The new facility will include a modern restroom with a shower, a sink, and a mirror, as well as a handicapped-accessible lavatory room.
The contract with the federal government’s General Services Administration was negotiated by the university, and will cover the design, construction, and operation of the project, according to UC officials. The public restroom will replace a small, single facility on campus that is not handicapped-accessible and is not accessible for students with disabilities.
