Weather Forecasters: Rain on Sunday Could Be a Chance

Cooler temperatures — and maybe some showers — headed to SoCal this weekend after some of the worst, rainiest heat of the year.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for a near-Arctic air mass to move northeast, which could lead to cooler temperatures for Southern California on Sunday.

And some showers could develop by Monday, forecasters said, but those could be the briefest or lightest of the month.

“There will be a little more sun,” NWS meteorologist Tom O’Day wrote in an email.

The heat that will settle in with the cold air will be a mix of hot air and cold air, said meteorologist Daniel Wirtz.

He said he could see more sunshine than he would see with the same temperature, but the combination could lead to more of the same kind of heat.

“My guess is that it will be more of a warm, dry day,” he said.

There are two potential rain chances on Sunday, he said.

The first, and more likely, is late on Sunday at around noon, he said.

That rain could be a little stronger than on Friday, but the rain chances will last only a while, and then they will disappear.

On Monday, the rain chances decrease again, but it may linger in the afternoon, so the rain won’t cover the skies until after 3 p.m., O’Day said.

“There’s also a chance of an isolated shower,” he said. “This time, it’s not likely to become widespread. It is just a possibility.”

But that could mean that there’s a chance that the morning won’t start off as warm.

It could mean a chance that even if the morning is wet, the afternoon won’t warm as much as it normally does on these days.

“There’s even the possibility of a daytime rainfall,” O’Day said.

And it could mean a chance for some light showers, he said.

The heat that will settle in with the cold air will be a mix of hot air and cold air, said meteorologist Daniel Wirtz.
