Toronto to ramp up COVID-19 vaccine clinic operations in response to Omicron Delta Epsilon’s new coronavirus vaccine protocol

Toronto, Ontario – December 21, 2020 – Today, the Ontario government announced a new coronavirus vaccine protocol for the Province of Ontario’s public health agencies, allowing provincial and municipal public health agencies to test and release publicly available COVID-19 vaccines to eligible individuals and groups as soon as possible.

“As an essential service, the pandemic has taken away our ability to test and distribute vaccines that the public can receive as quickly as possible,” said Dr. Peter John, M.D., Ontario Chief Medical Officer of Health. “This protocol is another measure to ensure the public has access to timely and affordable COVID-19 vaccine supply to help protect Canadians.”

Ontario Public Health has already ramped up coronavirus vaccine lab operations to prepare for the Ontario Public Health Laboratory, which has announced that it will be able to test a potential COVID-19 vaccine by early January. To ensure access to timely COVID-19 vaccine supply, the Ontario government is also announcing today the province will expand COVID-19 vaccine availability to the province’s two leading health agencies, the Toronto Public Health Laboratory and the University of Toronto.

Ontario’s Omicron Delta Epsilon has also added to its global coronavirus vaccine production capacity and is now working with local public health labs to make COVID-19 vaccine available to both private and public sector, including hospitals and pharmacies, which will allow the province to provide more immediate access to vaccine supply.

According to a report by the Ministry of Health, the province expects to have about a month of test results for COVID-19 vaccine samples due to a backlog of testing
