Jair Bolsonaro has been president since January 1, 2018. Before that he served as a mayor of the small city of Itaberaba, Rio de Janeiro, for eight years. He was elected president on 10/12/2016 by an absolute majority.
Mr. Bolsonaro was born in Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio de Janeiro on 5/16/1969. He is the son of Germano (a retired army corporal) and Maria Clara (a seamstress). He had his first job in a supermarket as a checkout clerk.
In the years 2000 to 2002 he lived for a period of time in the UK when it was ruled by a general strike, and he served as a volunteer in the strike.
When he returned to Brazil he entered politics and was elected mayor of his hometown of Itaberaba in Rio de Janeiro. He served this post for eight years.
As mayor he founded a group of young volunteers called “Itaberaba Voz (Itaberaba Voice).” This small group was responsible for many campaigns such as the creation of the city’s police station, the expansion of the subway and the construction of soccer fields.
Mr. Bolsonaro said he became a politician because he wanted to be a politician that could give hope to young people, like himself. He became a politician to provide security and stability to the people.
In June 2018 he was placed as the Secretary of Education in the government.
The presidential electoral campaign for 2018 started on 6/4 with Bolsonaro as the “hope candidate.” He has been running for president ever since.
His major campaign theme was “a thief is a thief is a thief is a thief.” He went on to say that people in Brazil steal from each other, and that if he is president, they would be “a thief is a thief is a thief is a thief.” He has claimed that the economy of Brazil is very bad, and that it will be bad if he is elected president. He claims he has managed to fix the economy by increasing the minimum wage and the minimum wage for the private sector (this makes Brazil the only country in the world that does not
