Will John Tory’s ‘prudent’ leadership be tough enough to tackle Toronto’s big issues if he’s re-elected?

John Tory’s run for the mayor has been the best thing to happen to Toronto in decades.

But the good feelings surrounding his campaign may evaporate as early as Friday when he officially launches his new government. That will give opposition parties a chance to make their mark on the new government.

Here’s what we hear about the opposition-leader debate and what the upcoming budget is expected to do to Toronto.

John Tory’s re-election was a resounding win for the people of Toronto, according to his campaign manager.

“John is proving that he can lead from the front and he has a plan for where he intends to go next,” campaign manager Dan Albasun said, “The debate on Friday will be a critical opportunity to test if, in fact, John can be trusted to make Toronto’s best decisions on issues that matter most to people like the tax, education and affordable housing.”

Albasun acknowledged that this will be a difficult week for Tory.

“This will be a very challenging week,” he said, “John has faced a lot of challenges in the past and this is one of the most challenging he has faced.”

Tory already faced the biggest challenge of his run for mayor, and in a matter of weeks, he’ll face the biggest challenges of his life.

On Friday, Tory opens the new Government of Ontario and the Toronto Region Board of Trade. There will be questions about the direction for Toronto’s economy, and about the role of public transit in that economy.

Last week, his government unveiled their first budget.

But on Friday he will answer questions from Toronto
