Ralph Lauren grew up in San Anselmo, California, the youngest of nine children. He was raised a Catholic, his mother a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, and he attended Catholic grade school from the first grade on until the sixth grade, when he transferred to an all-boys high school. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating with a degree in sociology and anthropology. It was during this time that he met his wife, Jeanne. Ralph Lauren joined Ralph Lauren Inc. in 1966, with three other employees—Ralph Lauren Jr., Charles Soto and Louis P. Trible—in a group of 30 men seeking to invest in the newly formed clothing company.

By the early 1970’s, Ralph Lauren was the largest manufacturer of men’s clothing on the West Coast. The company, which specialized in men’s clothing and sportswear, was based out of a series of rented buildings in an old industrial area in San Anselmo. The company’s name was derived from Ralph Lauren, the father of three whose initials are on the company’s product. The company’s first headquarters in the San Anselmo area was in the old Meehan’s Bakery, which was the first in the area, from the late ‘20s until 1964. In 1967, the company’s headquarters relocated to the old Pacific Auto Salvage Yard complex, which included the former American Bank & Trust building, which was renovated and became the company’s first office building.
